十六歲入行之後便以過人的技巧、多變音色及節奏敏感度，開始闖蕩歌壇。1934她在阿波羅劇院登台，就以漂亮的聲音、寬廣的音域受到重視，1935年開始與 Chick Webb的管絃樂團錄音，到了1937年幾乎超過一半的樂團都有與她合作的經驗，「A-Tisket, A-Tasket」更在1938年成為家喻戶曉的名曲。這個時期的艾拉算是一位流行、搖擺歌手，在中板的歌調表現上最為出色，當時她空雖擁有漂亮的歌喉，但是技巧上少了一點即興以及擬聲唱法，這方面的特色是她日後才發展起來的。

1939年六月Chick Webb死後，艾拉接管他的樂團開始自己闖蕩歌壇，不過由於經營困難因此她只得在1940年放棄樂團，轉往歌舞劇發展。艾拉在1941年間以及Decca錄音時期推出不少暢銷作品，1946年加入JATP並進行世界巡迴，同時開始跟Norman Granz合作，他同時成為她的經紀人。之後艾拉與Dizzy Gillespie的大樂團巡迴進行巡迴，開始逐漸將咆勃樂融入她的演唱中，也大量運用令人興奮的擬聲唱法。

1945-47年間，艾拉灌錄了 「Lady Be Good」、「How High the Moon」、「Flying Home」等專輯暢銷專輯。1948-52年間她嫁給貝斯手Ray Brown，並與他的三重奏合作，1950年更與鋼琴家Ellis Larkins推出一系列二重奏。1955艾拉與Norman Granz的Verve唱片公司簽約，專心灌錄爵士名家歌曲集，包括有蓋西文兄弟、Cole Porter、Rodgers and Hart、Duke Ellington、Harold Arlen、Jerome Kern、Johnny Mercer等人；這是爵士唱片史上空前的創意製作，也將艾拉的聲望在六十年代推向最頂峰。在與電影的關係方面，1955年艾拉參加電影「Pete Kelly’s Blues」的演出，後來該電影被改編成電視劇，同時由艾拉與法蘭克辛納屈共同演出，1959年艾拉為另一部電影「Blue Not For Me」演唱主題曲，1960年參加電影「Let No Man Write My Epitaph」的演出。

1972艾拉從Capitol以及Reprise唱片公司轉到Norman Granz新的Pablo唱片公司，七十年代艾拉主要與Count Basie、Oscar Peterson、Joe Pass合作，八十年代因為罹患嚴重眼疾以及心臟病，但是依然活躍於樂壇，直到1986年眼疾復發而逐漸淡出樂壇，1994年艾拉正式宣佈退休。艾拉於 1996年過世，在她長達一甲子的演唱生涯裡，留下許許多多珍貴錄音，主要散見Classic、Decca、Verve、Pablo等廠牌。

Considered one of Ella's greatest recordings, she's backed on this 1960 release by pianist Paul Smith. "Let No Man Write My Epitaph" was a 1960 Hollywood movie featuring Fitzgerald. The album hits at a depth of emotional understanding that critics often complained was missing in Ella's reading of jazz lyrics, and once again establishes her as one of the supreme interpreters of the Great American Songbook.
